Final road usage charge meetings set

The Department of Transportation is holding its final three of 14 community meetings on its proposed road usage charge instead of fuel tax paid at the pump.

The road usage charge system would require vehicle owners to pay for actual miles driven, which is considered a long-term replacement for the gas tax that is sustainable and fair to all road users, DOT officials say.

With the gasoline tax, owners pay the amount of fuel their vehicle uses, and this may not be sustainable as cars become more fuel efficient.

Hawaii motorists pay 16 cents a gallon in state fuel tax.

The following are the remaining community meetings being held:

Oahu

>> 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kalani High School

>> 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Castle High School Cafeteria, Kaneohe

Hawaii island

>> 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 9 at AJA Veterans Hall, Hilo
