One person died and two men were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash in Makiki early this morning.

Police said that the passenger of one of the vehicles alleges he was kidnapped.

A van and a sedan collided in a fiery wreck at the intersection of South King and Pensacola streets at about 1:45 a.m., according to Emergency Medical Services.

The unidentified driver was speeding southbound on Pensacola Street and ran through a red light into the intersection of Pensacola and South King Streets. The driver’s vehicle was broadsided by a van driven by a 60-year-old man who was traveling eastbound on South King Street.

As a result of the collision, both vehicles were engulfed in flames.

Paramedics treated the driver of the van, a 60-year-old man, before transporting him to the hospital in serious condition. However, a subsequent police report said the man was taken to the hospital in good condition. The driver of the sedan was “burned beyond recognition” and was declared dead at the scene, according to EMS.

Another man, 26, who may have been a passenger in the van, was found at the intersection of Beretania and Victoria streets and was treated for burns and abrasions before being transported to the hospital in serious condition, EMS reported.

Detectives later said that a 25-year-old man, who fled the scene of the accident, told police that he had been kidnapped. It is unclear if he was a passenger of the sedan or the van and whether he was the man found at the intersection described above.

Police have yet to release the identities of the people involved in the crash.

Police said speed appeared to be a contributing factor to the collision. Police said they did not know whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors.

Police have reopened Pensacola Street between Young and South King streets.

This is the 18th traffic fatality this year compared to 16 at the same time last year.

The investigation is ongoing.
