The Hawaii International Film Festival’s Spring Showcase will premiere the made-in-Hawaii documentary “The Adventures of Super CW (*Cancer Sucks),” a final project for Christa Wittmier, a nightlife blogger and former columnist for the Star-Advertiser.

The documentary, screening April 6 and 13, chronicles Wittmier’s experience with breast cancer and outreach to the community. Wittmier died Jan. 3.

The 22nd annual Spring Showcase returns to Honolulu’s Regal Dole Cannery theaters April 5 through 14, with 32 films from 13 countries.

Director Gerard Elmore, who brought “The Adventures of Super CW” to fruition, called it “the ultimate tribute for a woman the Hawaii community admired,” and said, “This is what Christa wanted. She wanted to show the movie in her hometown and share it with her friends. This is the movie that she wanted everyone to see.”

Filmmakers would like to edit a longer version of the film for future screenings. “We want this screening to serve as sort of a kickoff to the next phase,” Elmore said.

Oscar-winning documentary “Free Solo,” which chronicles the first free solo climb of El Capitan’s 900-meter vertical rock face at Yosemite National Park, is among other films programmed at the festival. The free screening at Ward Village Courtyard Cinema is scheduled for April 11.

For the first time this year, the Spring Showcase includes programmatic sections, including a “JapanFest” with eight films.
