LAS VEGAS >> The chief executive of Southwest Airlines says the Dallas-based carrier is considering adding nonstop flights between Las Vegas and Hawaii.
Southwest CEO Gary Kelly says launching flights to Hawaii from four California cities is the airline’s priority this year, but adding flights from Nevada to Hawaii c ould be possible next year.
The airline hopes to begin service to Hawaii in April.
It completed a test flight from Oakland, Calif., to Honolulu last month to show federal aviation officials that it should be authorized to begin flying across the Pacific Ocean.
The airline is awaiting certification by the Federal Aviation Administration to start the commercial flights to Hawaii.
Barnwell to cut pay after $4.6 million loss
A Hawaii company with local real estate investments and Canadian oil operations said its top officers and all directors have agreed to compensation cuts to reduce expenses after a recent $4.6 million loss.
Barnwell Industries Inc. reported the loss for its fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 31. The loss was more than quadruple a $1 million loss in the same 3-month period a year earlier.
Honolulu-based Barnwell said its chief executive and chief financial officer will take 26 percent salary cuts while directors receive lower fees.
The recent financial loss was largely due to weak oil and natural gas prices. An income tax benefit the company received in December 2017 also was a factor in the worse results in the recent quarter.
Shares of Barnwell stock closed on Wednesday at $1.38. That compares to a 52-week range of $1.28 on Dec. 17 and $2.47 on July 3.
