Makahiki games, such as ulu maika (stone disk rolling) and hukihuki (tug-of-war), as well as Hawaiian music at sunset, are all part of the festivities at Makahiki ma Kapolei Feb. 2 at Pu‘uokapolei at Kapolei Regional Park.
Makahiki ma Kapolei is a “cultural celebration of plenty and peace,” said Miki‘ala Lidstone, executive director of Ulu A‘e Learning Center, organizers of the event.
The learning center is a steward of Pu‘uokapolei, a cultural and native garden site. The celebration, which also honors those who have volunteered at Pu‘uokapolei through the years, is open to everyone.
“The event provides an opportunity for all to actively participate and engage in cultural practices,” Lidstone said.
The games, run by Makaiwa Landscaping, include moa pahe‘e (dart sliding), kukini (foot racing), ‘o‘o ‘ihe (spear throwing), hapai pohaku (stone carrying) and he‘e holua (hill sledding). There will be free cake and food plates for sale.
The celebration is on the lawn, so families are welcome to bring mats, blankets and lawn chairs.
“The highlight to Makahiki is definitely watching families come together in the spirit of competition and in celebration of Makahiki, a time-honored Hawaiian tradition,” Lidstone said.
