A 61-year-old Honolulu man who was hoping to become a bus driver is facing a possible 10-year state prison term for trying to pay off a
licensing examiner.
An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment last month charging Kevin Heungik Ahn with bribery.
Deputy prosecutor Ashley Tanaka told state Circuit Judge Colette Garibaldi that Ahn, also known as Heung Ahn, offered $2,000 in cash to the examiner to skip a part of the commercial driver license test. The examiner rejected the money.
Ahn showed up for the examination in the bus he was hoping to use for the road test.
Tanaka said when police searched the bus, they found the cash in a roadside assistance tool box.
Ahn posted $5,000 cash bail following his indictment and pleaded not guilty to the bribery charge. His trial is scheduled for next month.
Ahn previously had worked for a Honolulu-based travel and tour company but was not qualified as a tour bus operator.
