Hawaiian Airlines is relocating its check-in location for international passengers from Lobby 3 in Terminal 1 to Lobby 4 in Terminal 2 at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, state transportation officials announced today, in an effort to ease long security lines.

Starting Wednesday, all passengers traveling non-stop to Japan will begin using Lobby 4. Hawaiian Airlines will share Lobby 4 with Qantas Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Air Canada and Korean Air. Starting Jan. 9, Hawaiian’s passengers flying to international destinations, including American Samoa, will also check in at Lobby 4.

Signs at the terminal will be adjusted to reflect the change.

Hawaii Department of Transportation director Jade Butay said the move directs international travelers to Terminal 2, with the goal of relieving congestion in Terminal 1 during peak travel times between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. A new Transportation Security Administration checkpoint, meanwhile, has been added to the ground level of Terminal 1 during those peak hours.

“HDOT thanks the TSA, the airlines and employees for working toward a smooth transition,” said Butay in a news release. “We appreciate the patience of the traveling public during the move as we aim to improve the airport facilities and operations.”

Also starting Jan. 9, Hawaiian Airlines’ neighbor island flight check-ins will move from Lobby 2 to Lobby 3 in Terminal 1. Passengers traveling to North American destinations will continue to check in at Lobby 2 in Terminal 1.

During the transition, Hawaiian Airlines’ Team Kokua volunteers will help direct passengers to the appropriate lobby. A map of lobbies and checkpoints is also available online.

The following information on TSA checkpoints was provided by transportation officials:

>> Hawaiian Airlines passengers using Lobby 4 will use TSA checkpoints 2 and 3, which are located in Terminal 2.

>> Passengers on neighbor island and North American flights are encouraged to continue using one of the four available TSA checkpoints within Terminal 1.

>> A new TSA checkpoint on the ground level of Terminal 1 between baggage claim carousels 8 and 9 is now available daily between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for general boarding passengers during peak travel times. The checkpoint, however, does not have a separate Precheck line and is not recommended for travelers with strollers, large carry-on baggage or those requiring special assistance. Passengers using this checkpoint must also be able to stand on an escalator to get to the second level.
