Fire destroys unit in Hilo fourplex
More than 15 residents evacuated a fourplex in Hilo after a fire broke out in one of the units Thursday night.
Twenty-six firefighters responded to the blaze at 64 Ipuka St. in Unit D at approximately 11:30 p.m. The single-story structure is located at Lanakila Homes, a 364-unit public housing complex.
Battalion Chief Mike Hayashida said a neighbor observed flames emerging from a room in the 850-square-foot unit. The neighbor knocked on the door and alerted a woman and her child in the home of the fire.
When firefighters arrived, they observed large flames emanating from the unit.
Seventeen occupants of the fourplex had evacuated to the parking lot prior to the arrival of firefighters, Hayashida said.
Firefighters brought the fire under control at about 11:50 p.m. and extinguished it just before midnight. Hayashida said the fire destroyed the unit.
