A shirtless Kawaihoola Curnan grunted in pain as he walked away barefoot from the flow of Honolulu Marathon finishers pouring into Kapiolani Park on Sunday.
It was his eighth or ninth time finishing the race, but this year, facing strong tradewinds, he found people to run with in a pack, trading the lead to help lessen the work of running into the wind.
“Nice and cool,” said Curnan, 34, a Kauai resident, of the race after coming in at 3 hours and 30 minutes. “Can’t beat it.”
Like Curnan, many found the race offered a chance to bond with others over the 26.2 miles from downtown Honolulu to Hawaii Kai and back to Waikiki. More than 25,000 crossed the starting line for the marathon and its sister event, the Start to Park 10K run, which starts at the same time and location but ends at Kapiolani Park without continuing on to Hawaii Kai.
Sylvia Ravaglia, who had run the Honolulu Marathon 10 times on her own, ran it for the first time with her 10-year-old daughter Tiffany.
Ravaglia, a horse trainer from Waimea, said she began running marathons as a way to get in shape after giving birth. A year after Tiffany was born, Ravaglia ran her first Honolulu Marathon, then vowed to run the race every year until her daughter could run it with her.
About a year ago Tiffany said she wanted to run it too.
Ravaglia, 41, set up a training regimen for her daughter, and the mother and daughter finished just under their goal of 4 hours and 20 minutes.
“It was fun for the most part,” said Tiffany, who was one of about 200 race registrants between the ages of 7 and 14. “There was drag in the middle.”
Still, she never stopped running, except to fix her shoe.
Ravaglia, a nonathlete before her daughter was born, has about eight 100-mile races and three Ironman triathlons under her belt.
At this year’s Honolulu Marathon, she was able to focus solely on her daughter.
At the beginning of the race, she held Tiffany back because her pace was too fast, but in the second half she found herself pushing hard just to keep up with her daughter’s 7-minute, 40-second pace to the finish.
“I wasn’t running it for me at all,” Ravaglia said.
At the finish line, others who completed the marathon donned the gold medals and finishers’ shirts, which are berry pink with green lettering this year. Dozens used large bags of ice to cool their legs or glutes. A man in a Spider- Man costume said he wanted to run as someone different this year, having completed eight Honolulu Marathons previously.
“Very hot,” he said through the mask.
Two runners shared a photograph after spotting each other running barefoot. Keawe Mo‘o, 42, of Maui, said he runs with less soreness without shoes and finished in 3 hours and 35 minutes after passing 44-year-old Tsuyoshi Yoshino of Tokyo at about mile 15. Yoshino, who says he is known as the Barefoot Prince in Japan, ran with a haku and lei and blamed his slower time on a 60-mile run he completed in October.
Another young runner was 12-year-old Riley Herradura, who finished his third Honolulu Marathon, which he runs annually in memory of his maternal grandfather, who died of cancer in 2016. Herradura finished in just under 5 hours.
A seventh-grader at Ewa Makai Middle School, Herradura said he likes running because it gives him something to focus on rather than stressful things like schoolwork.
He started the run with his father but finished ahead of him. He said he began running the marathon to do something “tough” to honor his grandfather.
“He gives me strength and guidance to finish,” he said.
