Firefighters respond to shack ablaze in Honokohau Valley
Maui firefighters responded late Tuesday afternoon to a structure fire in Honokohau Valley and found a small, makeshift shack ablaze.
Maui Fire Department spokesman Rylan Yatsushiro said the shack was surrounded by “heaps of stuff,” also on fire, in an area measuring 60 feet by 40 feet.
He said it was unclear whether the 15-foot by 15-foot shack was being used as a home or not, but no one was inside when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames and contained the fire that was initially reported at 5:34 p.m. Two engines and two tankers were dispatched. The fire was extinguished at 9:42 p.m.
One firefighter, who fell into a hole amid the debris, received cuts to his hands on sharp material on the ground when he braced himself during the fall, Yatsushiro said.
He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
