Lihue woman, 35, in critical condition after car crash

A 35-year-old woman was in critical condition Friday after she lost control of her car and struck another van, Kauai police said.

The Lihue woman was traveling northbound on Nawiliwili Road in a gold Chevy pickup truck at around 7 p.m. Friday when she crossed both eastbound lanes of the highway and onto the raised concrete median, crashing into a Chrysler Pacifica van heading westbound, police said. The driver of the van was not injured.

Police said she sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Wilcox Hospital. She was transferred to Queen’s Hospital in critical condition.

Police closed a portion of Kaumualii Highway until 11 p.m. Friday.

Officers conducted an investigation on the scene, but it was unknown whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
