The Kapena Jack Young, the first of four new tugs for Young Brothers Ltd., the state’s largest interisland ocean cargo transportation firm, was given a traditional Hawaiian blessing in its home port of Kaunakakai, Molokai, on Sunday. The Kapena Jack Young, designed by Damen USA and built by Louisiana-based Conrad Shipyard, began service with Young Brothers on Sept. 24.
The tug is named after Capt. Jack Young Sr., one of three brothers who founded Young Brothers in 1900. The tug is also named for his son Capt. Jack Young Jr., who was a captain for the tug Mamo for many years before retiring.
“The Kapena Jack Young is representative of our commitment to the state to provide consistent and reliable on-time service while reducing carbon emissions and realizing increased fuel savings,” Young Brothers President Joe Boivin said.
