Fire investigators were unable to determine the cause of a fire that damaged a home in Nuuanu on Sunday.

Eleven units with 41 firefighters responded to the fire that broke out at 32 Kauila St. shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday. They brought the fire under control at approximately 3:35 a.m. and extinguished it at 5 a.m.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Scot Seguirant said a group of squatters was reportedly residing under the unoccupied structure and were heard on the property before the fire started.

The homeowner resides on the mainland.

Seguirant said no injuries were reported.

The exact cause and origin of the fire has been classified as undetermined due to a lack of evidence in the area. Damage to the structure and its contents was estimated at $250,000.

Two neighboring homes and a parked vehicle also sustained minor damage estimated at $3,000.
