A 41-year-old man died after being struck in a hit-and-run while crossing Farrington Highway early this morning near Maile Pink Market.

A pedestrian was killed early today after being struck by several vehicles while he was crossing Farrington Highway near Maili Beach Park, one of two hit-and-run accidents this morning on Oahu.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified him as Donald B. Calarruda, 41, of Waianae. The cause of death is pending.

Lt. James Slayter of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division said the pedestrian later identified as Calarruda was walking across the roadway toward the park in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Linakola Street when he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on the highway at about 3:50 a.m.

Calarruda was struck by a second vehicle traveling in the same direction, and was thrown onto the westbound lanes of the highway when he was struck by a third vehicle.

Slayter said he was taken in critical condition to a hospital where he later died.

Police said the first vehicle — described as a white pickup truck with pipe racks — fled the scene. It is unknown whether speed or alcohol were factors.

This is the 53rd traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared with 35 at the same time last year.

Police closed the westbound lanes on Farrington Highway near St. Johns Road for several hours as they investigated.

Police said the deadly collision was the second hit-and-run accident on Oahu today.

A 62-year-old moped rider was critically injured after he was struck by an unknown vehicle on the North Shore at about 2 a.m.

Police said the man was traveling Kahuku-bound on Kamehameha Highway the intersection of Ke Nui Road when he was struck from behind by a vehicle, which fled and has not been located.

The moped rider was taken to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition.

Emergency Medical Services said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The vehicle fled the scene and has not been located at this time. Based on the debris at the crash scene, investigators determined the vehicle is a gray, 2012 to 2016 Toyota Tacoma.

Police said the vehicle sustained damage to the front bumper and fender on the driver’s side.

Slayter said the two crashes that occurred this morning are unrelated.

Anyone with information on the vehicles involved in these two unrelated hit-and-runs should call police department’s Traffic Division at 723-3413 or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
