4 selected to U.S. men’s national team
Four players with Hawaii ties were named to the 14-man roster for the U.S. men’s national volleyball team on Wednesday. The team will compete at the FIVB World Championships in Italy and Bulgaria.
The U.S. (13-6) begins World Championship pool play on Sept. 12 against Serbia in Bari, Italy. The Americans last won this event in 1986.
Selected were 2016 Olympians Micah Christenson (Kamehameha), Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) and Erik Shoji (Punahou). Also named is former UH All-American Taylor Averill.
Loker named HS beach All-American
Kylin Loker, a freshman on the Hawaii beach volleyball team, was selected to the AVCA High School Beach All-America first team on Wednesday.
The 6-foot Loker won back-to-back San Diego high school pairs titles in 2015 and ’16 at Carlsbad (Calif.) High. She is the ninth high school All-American to be a Rainbow Wahine since the inception of the AVCA honors list in 2014, and the second first-team honoree in three years, joining Morgan Martin (2016).

The two are among five five high school All-Americans on this season’s SandBows roster. The others are honorable mentions Hi‘ilawe Huddleston (2014), Paige Dreeuws (2017) and Ashley Stevens (2017).
