The accused driver of a sport utility vehicle that crashed into a bus stop fronting Hauula Shopping Center in December pleaded no contest in state court Thursday to negligent homicide, negligent injury and two charges of fleeing the scene.

Vika Unga, 37, faces a maximum 10-year prison term for one fleeing charge, five-year terms for the other fleeing charge and negligent homicide, and a one-year jail term for negligent injury at sentencing in October. She remains in custody until then.

Frederick Aalmo, 61, of Portland, Ore., died from injuries he suffered in the crash. A 55-year-old woman was seriously injured. Both were sitting at the bus stop.

Honolulu police said Unga fled after the crash but turned herself in five hours later.

David Kinikini, Unga’s husband, remained in the Ford Explorer. He was later charged with hindering prosecution for telling police he was the driver.

Kinikini, 35, is scheduled to stand trial later this month for the hindering and other charges stemming from two later incidents. Police say one incident started when officers spotted Kinikini putting mail into a mailbox and ended with him getting charged with resisting arrest, assaulting an officer in the Kaneohe Station and possessing methamphetamine, marijuana and somebody else’s personal confidential information. The other incident is the attempted robbery of a 7-Eleven store across from the Mayor Wright Homes public-housing complex. Kinikini is free on $200,000 bail.

Unga had been been free on $25,000 bail, which was increased to $50,000 for violating her release by operating a vehicle. She was taken into custody last month after the court increased her bail again to $100,000 for again operating a vehicle and other violations of her release.
