Maui firefighters trying to contain 2,500-acre brush fire
Maui firefighters today continue to work to contain a fire that already has burned more than 2,500 acres of fallow cane and brush between Haleakala Highway and Pulehu Road.
The fire was reported at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and has not grown, Maui fire spokesman Rylan Yatsushiro said in a news release.
“While crews have made significant progress, this fire is not expected to be officially considered ‘contained’ until all perimeters are secured,” Yatsushiro said. “…Crews worked through the night to continue to secure the very large perimeter.”
No structures are threatened and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
In an unrelated blaze, Maui firefighters have contained a three- to four-acre brush fire that broke out at 3:55 a.m. this morning near Kuihelani Highway and Honoapi‘ilani Highway near Maalaea.
