FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers to open on the Fourth of July

The Federal Emergency Management Agency encourages those who suffered individual losses from the mid-April floods to visit the Disaster Recovery Centers on Kauai and Oahu, which will be open on the Fourth of July.

The centers are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Hanalei and Kapaa elementary schools on Kauai, as well as from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Aina Haina and Keolu elementary schools on Oahu. During the rest of the week, they are open longer hours.

The centers, part of FEMA’s effort to ensure all eligible survivors are aware of assistance options available to them, are set up as a one-stop shop, with representatives from federal, state, and local agencies, along with local non-profits, to help those affected by the floods.

“The most important thing people can do right now is to register with FEMA at the Disaster Recovery Centers, online, or by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362),” said federal coordinating officer Dolph Diemont in a news release. “People can only get federal assistance if they register — that’s the only way they can start the process.”

FEMA officials — carrying appropriate ID — are also going door-to-door in some areas to ensure claimants are aware of the assistance that is available to them.

The individual assistance declaration was the result of a successful appeal by Gov. David Ige’s office, and while some time has passed since the mid-April floods, claimants now have an opportunity now to get relief.
