Barking dogs alerted a Mililani woman to a fire that broke out today in a Mililani condominium unit.

The Honolulu Fire Department responded to an 8:31 a.m. emergency call by dispatching seven units staffed with 23 personnel to the Wikao Street condominium.

According to an HFD report, a woman and two children were sleeping in the unit when the fire started. The unit was equipped with a smoke detector but it was not working.

Awakened by the sound of her dogs barking, the woman used a fire extinguisher to fight the fire, which was contained to the kitchen area.

Arriving firefighters took up the effort and had the fire contained by 8:57 a.m. and fully extinguished by 9:06 a.m.

Emergency Medical Services personnel treated the woman for smoke inhalation at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damages have yet been estimated.
