Standing, from left are, Associate Justice Elena Kagan, Associate Justice Samuel Alito Jr., Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch. Kennedy said Tuesday that he is retiring after more than 30 years on the court.

Justice Anthony M. Kennedy announced today that he would retire from the Supreme Court. His vacancy sets up a showdown for a replacement that could change the direction of the highest court in the country.
