Question: Please tell about the free computer classes for seniors. I had an appointment at the Apple store, but it was too loud for me and I couldn’t quite keep up with what they were saying.
Answer: There are numerous opportunities for older folks to learn about using computers, but we think you’re interested in the Great Aloha Run Computer Class, an annual summer program that introduces people age 55 and older to the basics of sending email, surfing the internet and other tasks.
The class lasts two hours, but you can retake it until you have mastered the basic skills, as long as space is available. Sessions are free but reservations are required. To sign up, call or email coordinator Rene Mansho at 528-7388 or rene@greataloharun.com.
Classes are scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. on the following dates:
>> May 14-16, 21-22 and 30
>> June 4-6, 11-15, 18-20, 22, 25-27, 29
>> July 9, 11-13, 16-20, 23-25, 27, 30-31
>> Aug. 1-3, 6-7, 14-15
On Aug. 16 there will be a luncheon for all participants.
The classes will be held at 418 Kuwili St., Suite 102, the office of the Great Aloha Run Carol Kai Charities Inc.
Q: Are tourists allowed to take their dogs on TheBus? I told a lady she couldn’t, and she said they let visitors do it. This is a pet, not a service animal.
A: Animals other than service animals are not permitted unless they are small ones in a cage or carrier, and the cage or carrier fits under the seat or on the passenger’s lap without inconveniencing other passengers, according to TheBus’ website. This rule applies to residents and visitors alike.
Q: I know a young man who thinks he is going to get a job as a dishwasher at one of those no-windows clubs. Doesn’t he have to be 21?
A: No. Lap-dancers and their customers must be at least 21, but other club employees can be as young as 18, according to Chapter 41, Article 40 of the Revised Ordinances of Honolulu, which covers “lap dancing establishments.” We’re assuming that’s what you meant by a no-windows club, because people outside can’t easily view the what occurs inside the venue.
Sec. 41-40.2(b) says “a person under 21 years of age shall not enter a lap dancing establishment unless the person is an employee of the establishment and at least 18 years of age.” Sec. 41-40.4(b) says “a person under 21 years of age shall not lap dance in any lap dancing establishment.”
So, an 18-year-old could work in the kitchen but not perform lap dances or patronize the club as a customer, according to the law.
Age restrictions for “nude dancing nightclubs” (as distinct from lap-dance clubs) are similar, and can be found in ROH Sec. 41-41.4.

I know the city has a lot on its plate, but it’s a shame how much work is left undone. The median strip on Kilauea Avenue is so overgrown you can barely see across the street. I’m sure we’re not the only neighborhood with this problem. — A reader
(Kokua Line has received numerous complaints from around the island about median strips and road and highway shoulders overgrown with weeds, no doubt nourished by the recent heavy rain, at least in East Oahu. The accompanying picture taken Sunday on Kilauea Avenue near Hunakai Street confirms the reader’s complaint.)

On April 25 I had put my mail on the back of my car, got busy doing something else, and then when I got in my car to go on errands, I totally forgot the mail was on the trunk. When I got home I saw my mail neatly stacked on my sidewalk. Thank you very much to the person who took the time to pick up all the mail, which I assume was probably spread all over Manoa Road. — M.B.
