Honolulu-based ocean cargo transportation firm Matson Inc. delivered considerably more cash, equipment and services to charity last year in Hawaii and other places the company serves.
Matson said in an annual
report that its charitable giving rose 28 percent to $3.7 million
last year from $2.9 million the year before.
Roughly 800 groups doing charitable work shared in the contributions, which included $2.2 million in cash and $1.5 million worth of goods or services that included the use of shipping containers and discounted or free shipping.
By region, 435 Hawaii organizations received $1.8 million, 68 Alaska organizations received
$1.1 million, 247 mainland organizations received $575,000 and about $310,000 went to to 109 organizations in Guam, Micronesia and South Pacific islands on Matson routes.
“One of our core values at Matson is contributing positively to the communities in which we work and live,” Matt Cox, Matson chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “It’s not a slogan. We try to live our values and last year, I’m proud to say on behalf of all Matson employees, we contributed more than ever.”
