Emergency Medical Services transported an 8-year-old girl to a hospital Thursday after she was involved in a two- vehicle crash on the southbound lanes of the H-2 freeway near Waipio Gentry.
The collision occurred after the Ka Uka Boulevard onramp just before 7:50 a.m. Lt. Ben Moszkowicz of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division said a gray Honda Fit and red Nissan Altima were traveling southbound on the freeway when the cars collided as one of the vehicles attempted to change lanes.
Moszkowicz said the Honda, operated by a 33-year-old Wahiawa man, lost control and struck a tree.
EMS treated and transported him in serious condition to a hospital. The child who was in the Honda also was transported to a hospital, but in “extremely critical condition,” Moszkowicz said. The Nissan driver, a 33-year-old woman, was reportedly in good condition and refused treatment.
Police said speed and alcohol were not involved. The investigation is ongoing.
Man indicted in attempted arcade kidnapping
An Oahu grand jury has returned an indictment charging a 45-year-old man who allegedly attempted to carry off a 9-year-old girl from an arcade at Ala Moana Center.
The grand jury Wednesday charged Jason Dee Nolen with attempted kidnapping and third-degree sexual assault. His arraignment is set for Monday at Circuit Court.
Nolen remains in custody at the Oahu Community Correctional Center in lieu of $300,000 bail.
On March 19 at Lucky Strike Social, police said, a man later identified as Nolen followed the girl around the arcade and allegedly touched her buttocks.
She walked away and entered a video game booth. According to a court document, Nolen followed her and “from behind, grabbed her from her crotch area” and lifted her off the ground. The girl managed to break free after she kicked him. Police said Nolen immediately fled the arcade.
Police released a sketch and surveillance video of the man at the arcade. Police arrested Nolen on March 31 at his residence at Chinatown Gateway Plaza Apartments.
Kalani High threat prompts police investigation
Police have opened a first-degree terroristic threatening investigation after Kalani High School received a threat made against the school Wednesday afternoon.
A police presence and an increased security staff were expected on campus Thursday in response to the threat.
In a letter sent to parents and guardians, Principal Mitchell Otani said, “All threats to our school or students are taken very seriously and are investigated thoroughly.”
Penalties for terroristic threats range from detention to possible arrest and criminal charges.
“The safety of our students is a major priority and we are committed to providing a secure campus,” Otani said.
There are no arrests at this time.
Police investigate arson at Kalihi business
A Kalihi business was the target of an arsonist Wednesday morning.
An unknown person set a door to the business on fire, damaging it, police said. The incident occurred between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Police have initiated a first-degree arson investigation.
