A 29-year-old woman from Hawaii and her unborn son were killed Monday in a hit-and-run crash in Las Vegas as she was driving to work.
Monique “Nikki” K. Leiwalo was born on Oahu and raised in Waipahu by her grandparents. She graduated from Waipahu High School and Heald College.
Family members said she was due to give birth to her second child in mid-May. Leiwalo’s longtime partner, Anthony Cruz, said, “He was going to be named after me.”
The couple have a 9-year-old son, Jairae Cruz.
Police said a 2006 Dodge Durango driven by a 26-year-old man rear-ended the 2014 Dodge Dart driven by Leiwalo. The Dart veered off the roadway and crashed into a sign pole, said Detective Jeff Bangle of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
The collision occurred at about 6:50 a.m. (Las Vegas time) Monday on North Rainbow Boulevard, south of West Lake Mead Boulevard. Police said the car operated by Leiwalo was traveling north on Rainbow Boulevard and approaching West Lake Mead Boulevard.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced Leiwalo dead at the scene.
Police said the Durango driver sustained minor injuries in the crash. The driver, identified by police as Timothy Naas Jr., exited his vehicle and walked away from the scene. Patrol officers located him nearby and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol involving death and felony hit-and-run.
The investigation is ongoing.
Leiwalo moved to Las Vegas in 2013 with Cruz and their son.
“We came here to build a life,” said Cruz, 26, in a phone interview from Las Vegas. The couple had been together for over 10 years.
Leiwalo was on her way to work at the Ear, Nose & Throat Consultants of Nevada office, where she was a medical assistant, said her sister Jasmine “Pua” Leiwalo.
Leiwalo worked full time there and part time as a waitress at Aloha Kitchen.
She loved hiking, Cruz said. Cruz recalled how they hiked to every single waterfall on Oahu before they moved to Las Vegas. “She’s really adventurous,” Cruz said.
On Monday morning Cruz received a call from Leiwalo’s supervisor, asking where she was because she didn’t show up at work.
Her supervisor found the crash scene and informed Cruz a mangled vehicle looked similar to Leiwalo’s Dodge Dart.
Cruz immediately drove to the scene. “I drove through the yellow tape and ran up to the crash (scene). As soon as I got there, I knew it was her car.”
Leiwalo was kind and had a pure heart, he said. “Her soul was as just beautiful.” Leiwalo’s sister further described her as outgoing, selfless and humble.
When asked what she would say to the alleged drunken driver, she said, “You took two innocent lives for what reason? And then you ran away on top of that?”
He should have taken an Uber or Lyft instead of driven under the influence of alcohol, she added. “Seriously, you could’ve prevented it.”
In disbelief of Leiwalo’s death, Cruz said, “Me and my son keep wishing she’ll walk through that door.”
A GoFundMe account has been created to help assist Leiwalo’s family. Donations can be made to www.gofundme.com/in-our-hearts-nikki-amp-baby-boy.
