Pedestrian fatally struck by truck in Kona identified

A 50-year-old man died today after he was struck by a septic pumping truck in Kailua-Kona.

He has been identified as Peter Sigrah of Kailua-Kona.

Shortly after 5:50 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a collision between the truck operated by a man and a pedestrian at Queen Kaahumanu Highway near the entrance of the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park.

When firefighters arrived, they observed a woman performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the pedestrian. Firefighters took over and conducted life-saving efforts to no avail.

Police temporarily closed lanes in the area to investigate.

The Hawaii County Fire Department said it’s unclear at this time whether the pedestrian was on the roadway when the truck struck him.

The woman who performed CPR on the pedestrian was not involved in the collision.

This is the fifth traffic fatality this year compared with four at this time last year.
