Maui waters claim ninth victim in 2 weeks
A 71-year-old California man has died after he was found floating face down off of Maluaka Beach in Makena.
He has been identified as Alexander Tsukerman of Berkeley, Calif. His death marks the ninth drowning on Maui in two weeks.
Just after 10:15 a.m. Saturday, fire rescue and lifeguards responded to a call of an unresponsive man identified as Tsukerman floating on the water’s surface approximately 100 yards from shore on the north side of Maluaka Beach.
Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto, spokesman of the Maui Fire Department, he went snorkeling alone while his family members and friends were on the beach. A bystander called 911 when they saw Tsukerman floating on the surface and noticed he wasn’t moving.
He was wearing a two-piece mask and snorkel when he was found.
Lifeguards brought him to shore where emergency crews administered CPR. Tsukerman regained a pulse and was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he died Sunday.
