One man died and a man and woman were critically injured in a single-vehicle crash on Hauula Homestead Road sometime after 4 a.m. today.

An 18-year man died today in an early-morning crash in Hauula.

Positive identification is pending, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.

At about 4:20 a.m., police said a silver Toyota pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Hauula Homestead Road when it skidded a few hundred feet on a bend in the roadway and struck a large tree. The vehicle flipped over upon impact, said Lt. Andre Peters of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division.

Honolulu firefighters responded and extricated three occupants who were trapped inside the pickup truck.

Emergency Medical Services transported the 18-year-old man — who was seated in the front passenger seat at the time of the crash — to Kahuku Hospital in critical condition where he died.

Paramedics also transported the driver, a 27-year-old man, and a passenger, a 22-year-old woman, to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. Peters said their condition was later upgraded to serious condition.

Speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. The posted speed limit in the area is 25 miles per hour.

Peters said the three occupants were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Police have initiated a negligent homicide and negligent injury investigations.

This is the fourth traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared to one at the same time last year.
