A suspicious fire at Kahului Elementary School Friday night caused more than $1 million in damage and has closed the school until Thursday.

Kahului Elementary School will remain closed to students until Thursday as staff work to cope with the aftermath of a suspected arson fire.

More than 960 students from preschool through fifth grade attend the central Maui school.

The fire, which broke out Friday night, damaged six classrooms and affected the school’s water lines, according to the Department of Education. Maui police suspect that the fire was deliberately set and estimated damage at $1.2 million.

School staff will report to the school on Tuesday and Wednesday to work out academic contingency plans for students, who are to return Thursday.

The fire burned in separate parts of the campus, including a central building as well as two portable classrooms. It started at 9:30 p.m. Friday and firefighters brought it under control at 11 p.m. and extinguished it at 12:50 a.m. Saturday.
