Duff Goldman’s genial way with kids will be on display in its full glory when he gets to teach hundreds of his little fans how to decorate cupcakes for two hours Sunday at the seventh annual Hawai‘i Food &Wine Festival.
The first 1,000 youngsters to attend the “Keiki in the Kitchen” event at Bishop Museum will have fun with frosting alongside Food Network star Goldman, the “Kids Baking Championship” co-host, at 11 a.m. and noon sessions.
Goldman, who became a hit on the “Ace of Cakes” series (2006 to 2011), will headline a day of food, fitness and fun with TV personality Adam Richman and 32 celebrity chefs. The entrance fee is $5 for the day’s activities, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“The popularity of TV shows about food and competitions featuring young chefs is undeniable, so it was important for us to offer more interactive experiences with celebrities who are passionate about cooking and children,” said Denise Yamaguchi, the festival’s chief executive officer.
The event is a haven for foodie families. Attendees can get autographs and photos with culinary stars like Michelle Bernstein and David Burke, including local chefs Alan Wong and Roy Yamaguchi.
The festival is also bringing back popular keiki cooking classes, where kids can learn to make a Chunky Monkey tart and a turkey turnover. Classes are $30 and include the entrance fee and an embroidered festival Chef Works apron; spaces are limited.
For a live cook-off, top three youth finalists in the Localicious recipe contest will prepare and present their dishes to celebrity chef judges.
What’s it like to eat Hokule‘a style? The crew of the iconic Polynesian canoe will lead a cooking demonstration and teach children about their worldwide voyage. Kids will learn about agriculture technology and explore sustainability and stewardship of the earth.
