Pali Highway town-bound reopens, but scheduled lane closures loom
Pali Highway reopened at approximately 11:11 a.m. following a closure of the townbound lanes after the tunnel this morning due to a vehicle fire two hours earlier.
Motorists should be advised, however, of several scheduled lane closures and intermittent stoppages for Likelike Highway starting Wednesday morning.
The Honolulu-bound right lane of Likelike Highway will be closed continuously at the intersections of Alu Street and Gulick Avenue over a 24-hour period, seven days a week, beginning Wednesday, according to state officials.
The state Department of Transportation said work on the Likelike Highway Resurfacing project will begin at the Alu Street intersection, then move to the vicinity of Gulick Avenue. Two lanes will be open for through traffic at all times and motorists will still be able to turn onto Likelike Highway during the closure at the Alu Street/Likelike Highway intersection. The continuous lane closure is required to construct four new catch basins under the roadway.
In addition, contractors for the Hawaiian Electric Company are continuing their work on power transmission equipment, requiring three, 10-minute, intermittent stoppages for all lanes of traffic between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday on Likelike Highway (on the mountain side of the H-3 overpass). The Kaneohe-bound H-3 exit ramp to Likelike Highway will also be closed intermittently.
HECO contractors are using a helicopter to fly equipment from a transmission structure adjacent to the highway to another structure located on the mountain ridge.
