Fire destroys home in Kau

Fire completely destroyed a Big Island home in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision of Kau early this morning.

The Hawaii County Fire Department said the single-story, 600-square-foot structure was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

The house appeared to be abandoned, and its value was estimated at $15,000, the fire department said in a news release.

Firefighters responded to the 12:01 a.m. alarm at Koa Lane and Lei Parkway intersection. The first unit arrived on scene at 12:11 a.m. and had the fire under control in about an hour, and was extinguished two hours later.

No one was injured.

The cause and origin of the fire is unknown, the fire department said.
