A preliminary magnitude 6.1 struck off the coast of Japan early today.

A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Japan early today but does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The preliminary magnitude 6.1 temblor hit at 6:37 a.m. Hawaii time 208 miles east of Sendai at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any warnings, watches or advisories following the quake.
