Honolulu is using heavy equipment to remove the sand plug at the mouth of Ka‘elepulu Stream at Kailua Beach Park from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. this week.

The public is asked to avoid the work area as well as to avoid swimming in the ocean immediately adjacent to the sand plug that is being removed since strong currents may result from the opened stream mouth. The city’s Department of Facility Maintenance is performing the work in accordance with terms of a permit from the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The city hopes to complete the work by Wednesday afternoon.

In addition, signs will be posted to warn beachgoers of discharge into the ocean.
