Canoe crew, visiting firefighter rescue swimmer on Maui

A man was transported to a hospital after bystanders saw him in distress at Ulua Beach in Wailea.

Shortly after 8:15 a.m. Sunday, Maui fire crews responded to a call of a man in his 50s to 60s who bystanders pulled to the shore from the ocean fronting the Wailea Elua Village condominium.

The Maui Fire Department said a canoe crew brought him to shore after they observed him having a “possible medical emergency” while he was in the water.

When firefighters arrived, they observed a firefighter, who was visiting Maui, and other bystanders administering CPR on the victim until paramedics arrived and performed advanced life-saving measures.

The man regained a pulse and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
