Firefighters extinguished a brush fire in Anahola, Kauai, on Monday, in an open field below Pilipoli Road. No injuries were reported and no homes were threatened. Crews responded to the roughly 30-acre fire at about 5:50 p.m. Abandoned mixed waste such as vehicles and tires hindered firefighters, but the blaze was under control by 6:30 p.m. The discarded waste is expected to smolder for some time.

Hundreds of people turned out Monday for the funeral services for John Martin Pahinui at the Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary. Pahinui died May 28 at the age of 65, and was a member of the prominent musical Pahinui family.
