Hawaii island police are looking for anyone who may have witnessed the start of a runaway brush fire in Waimea that damaged an uninhabited structure and a vehicle, and prompted the closure of a section of Route 190 on Friday.
The fire was reported at 11:58 a.m. in a dry, grassy area of a residential property on the 64-700 block of Paeli Alanui Street and spread quickly, police said.
Police closed Route 190 from the Old Saddle Road intersection to the Waimea Airport Road intersection.
The public was further advised by fire officials to avoid the Puukapu Farm Lots area.
At 8 p.m., crews had contained about 80 percent of the fire and the highway was reopened.
No injuries were reported.
Police detectives were investigating the cause of the blaze. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact Detective Dominic Uyetake at 326-4646, ext. 228, or via email at Dominic.Uyetake@hawaiicounty.gov; or to call the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.
