Two fire companies are standing watch over a Hawaii Kai brush fire in Kamilonui Valley that continued to burn after sunset.

No damage was reported, and no homes were immediately threatened, although some utility poles may be in danger, Honolulu Fire Capt. David Jenkins said.

Firefighters planned to stay overnight to ensure that homes at the bottom of the valley would be protected, Jenkins said.

At 5 p.m. the fire department dispatched six units, for a total of 16 firefighters, to Kamilonui Valley,where 20 acres had burned by 7:15 p.m.

The first fire crew arrived at 5:03 p.m. The department’s Air 1 helicopter made water drops until 7:15 p.m. and ceased operations due to darkness.

Ground crews also used hand tools to control the spread of the fire.
