STAR-ADVERTISER

Surf N Salsa’s enchilada, left; Taco Trio, bottom; and steak plates are all cooked to order on the food truck in Haleiwa.

66-521 Kamehameha Highway; 692-2471. Open 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays.

Fresh, homemade and authentic are the operative words at the wildly popular Surf N Salsa Mexican food truck, now parked in Haleiwa town. Handmade tortillas, flavorful salsas and sauces, and fresh guac and veggies come together in tasty dishes that have the faithful returning again and again.

And waiting, with unwavering vigilance — even when a 20-minute wait creeps to 40, there’s nary a peep to be heard. Customers know their food will be worth it.

The contemporary Taco Boat ($10.99), for instance, of three tortillas filled with chicken, steak or pork, make a hearty meal. A sopes plate ($14.50) features a pair of thick, deep-fried tortilla topped with beans, veggies and meat. There are the usual suspects: taco salad, burritos, quesadilla, enchiladas. But the menu is also accented with a few Latin items, including the Camarones al Ajillo ($14.50), shrimp marinated in garlic sauce. Prices range from a 99-cent serving of salsa to a carne asada plate for $16.50.

All reflect the family recipes of truck owners Olga Rodriguez and her son, Jhon Acuna. The duo and other family members cook the dishes fresh.
