Farrington student earns top spot in Shriners’ contest

Jonalyn Cabusora, a 17-year-old student at Farrington High School, received a $250 cash prize and her artwork will be used as inspiration in the design of the hospital’s new imaging equipment.

Jonalyn Cabusora, a 17-year-old student at Farrington High School, was named the overall winner of Shriners Hospitals for Children’s “Under the Sea” art contest. Nearly 1,000 entries were received.

Cabusora received a $250 cash prize and her artwork will be used as inspiration in the design of the hospital’s new imaging equipment. She also received four annual passes to the Waikiki Aquarium, a snorkeling set courtesy of Oceanic Worldwide and a Papa John’s pizza. Her high school will receive $1,000.

Other winners are Amelia Smith, 8, Ala Wai Elementary School; Alyssa Birmingham, 13, Hawaii Tech Academy; and Min Yi Chen, 15, Castle High School. Each student received $100, four tickets to the aquarium, a snorkeling set and pizza.

Birmingham also nabbed a spot in the People’s Choice Awards. Her fellow winners in the category are Lauryn Grace Paloma, 9, Mililani Mauka Elementary; and Spencer Ilagan, 17, Mililani High School. They each received $100 and a Papa John’s pizza.

The teachers who won a drawing for a $100 gift card for school supplies are Carol Bendell-Wiers, Holy Nativity School; Mari Aipa, Manoa Elementary School; Lokelani Han, Kula Kaipuni O Kualapu‘u School; Starr Anastasio, Kealakehe Intermediate School and Kelley Dame, Koloa Elementary School.
