When I opened the Egg-Tastic box, I knew there was hope for this microwave scrambled egg maker. The creators, As Seen on TV, included a cooking guide based on microwave wattage. So smart! I didn’t have to Google any conversions for the office microwave or my microwave at home. And an enclosed sheet of paper provided easy-to-read four-step instructions, safeguards, cleaning advice and a breakdown of components. These creators were thorough and efficient. Bravo.
How it works: I cracked two eggs into the ceramic-silicone cooker, mixed them using chopsticks, placed the lid, then put it in a 1,250-wattage microwave for 1 minute and 10 seconds. There’s a fill-to line on the inside of the cooker, which can handle up to four eggs at a time, fewer if your eggs are extra large or you’re adding diced veggies or meat.
When cooking four eggs at once, I followed the instructions to stir the egg mixture after a minute and 20 seconds, then cook for another 20 seconds. At the stirring interval the eggs looked done, but orange liquid sat under the fluffy yellow mass. So don’t be fooled.
I have three important caveats. First, your microwave must have a working turntable. Second, the lid does not fit snugly onto the cooker, so don’t force it; I just set it on top. And finally, the most important: Use potholders when removing the cooker from the microwave. The ceramic bowl gets very hot. I repeat, very hot.
Does it work? Yes, although in both my tests the egg turned out on the dry and firm side, so if you like a soft and runny scramble, this product isn’t for you.
Pros: No pan or oil needed. Eat right from the cooker. Fast. It’s fairly easy to wash, but you will have to scrub the egg residue off. Cooking spray might help, or a soak in hot water. Dishwasher safe. So compact I can leave this on my desk or in a drawer to make an inexpensive breakfast or snack at work.
Cons: The cooker gets so hot, I’m torn on whether children should use it. If washing by hand, the silicone parts must be removed and washed separately.
Cost and availability: I got mine at Longs Drugs in Ala Moana Center for $10. Also available for $7.30 at amazon.com and walmart.com, and $9.95 at asseenontv.com.
Worth it? Yes.
