Struggling over the death of her brother, Markis Carveiro, Luciana Urbanozo remembers how he was always “the life of the party.”
“That’s what I’m going to miss about him the most: his laughter, his positive energy, just the joy he brought when he was around,” said Urbanozo during a phone interview Monday from Colorado Springs, Colo.
Carveiro, 28, of Kapaa, died Friday morning in a head-on collision with a beverage delivery truck in Kealia, Kauai. Police said Carveiro was traveling south with three passengers in a Nissan Cube on Kuhio Highway near St. Catherine Cemetery when the vehicle crossed the centerline and struck the truck heading north.
Passenger Ashley Gorospe, 26, of Kapaa, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Two-year-old Kawainakoa Camat, who was in the front passenger seat, died Sunday from injuries he suffered in the crash.
County officials confirmed Tuesday that the boy’s mother, 28-year-old Chelsey-Lynn Perreira, died Monday night at The Queen’s Medical Center from her injuries.
The delivery truck driver was not seriously injured.
Police are continuing their investigation.
Carveiro has two sons, ages 1 and 5.
“He was a great father,” his sister said. “He just loved spending time with his boys. They were his world.”
In addition to spending time with his children, Carveiro enjoyed going to the beach and fishing.
Urbanozo said her brother always saw the good in people and was compassionate. “He was always there to lend a helping hand.”
Nathan Apuna, whose son Arian has two children, young girls, with Gorospe, described her as outgoing, with a great sense of humor. She was fun-loving and family-oriented, he said as he scrolled through photos of the couple on his smartphone while at Starbucks on Keeaumoku Street.
The elder Apuna said Gorospe and his son had an on-and-off relationship but recently decided to start anew and rebuild their relationship. Apuna said Gorospe will be best remembered for her kind nature and giving heart.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
