The Liberty Dialysis Center in Kailua- Kona is temporarily closed because of an equipment malfunction.
Spokesman Jonathan Stone said the outpatient facility at the Keahou Shopping Center, 78-6831 Alii Drive, closed at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, before opening the door to patients, after staff discovered a reverse osmosis pump was not working.
Stone said a replacement part has been ordered, and the Kailua -Kona facility is expected to reopen either today or Saturday.
Patients suffering from chronic kidney conditions due to diabetes, heart disease or other serious medical conditions undergo dialysis to remove waste and excess fluid from the body.
“We have made arrangements for our Kona patients to receive dialysis at our Hilo and North Hawaii clinics,” Stone said in an emailed statement.
The Hilo facility is at 1384 Kinoole St., and the North Hawaii facility is at 67-1123 Mamalahoa Highway.
Victim ID’d in accident at cave
A 33-year-old California man whose body firefighters recovered from a freshwater cave in Hana was identified as Gregory Wilhelm of Novato.
The Maui Fire Department said Wilhelm was swimming with three of his friends from Maui on Sunday afternoon just outside of the Waianapanapa Freshwater Caves.
He and a friend decided to enter and explore the caves, and used light from a cellphone sealed in a plastic bag while inside one.
The Fire Department said his friend headed out of the cave and noticed Wilhelm was missing. He returned to the cave to look for him but found only the cellphone.
His friend left the area and called for help. The Fire Department’s dive rescue team and Air 1 helicopter located Wilhelm’s body about 75 feet from the cave’s entrance.
