In dealing with Oahu’s homeless, Gov. David Ige said, “The reality is in the last 12 months we’ve touched more than 5,000 people, either placing them into permanent housing, or … we’ve helped 3,000 stay out of becoming homeless.” Ige, left, is with Pankaj Bhanot, director of the state Department of Human Services, at a blessing for the new Family Assessment Center in Kakaako. Homeless families can stay at the facility up to 90 days while staff helps them transition into long-term housing.
