A Japanese midget sub washed up on shore on Dec. 8, 1941, off Bellows Field in Waimanalo. Suffering from a faulty gyrocompass, the sub was freed from a reef after it was bombed. Its captain, Kazuo Sakamaki, tried to scuttle the vessel but failed. He was taken prisoner.
