A boil water advisory has been canceled for Honokohau residents by the Maui Department of Water Supply after water samples determined there were no traces of coliform bateria contamination.

The advisory, which had been issued Tuesday, was in response to possible E. coli contamination.

Officials say the water quality meets federal and state standards.

A potable water tanker was provided on Honokohau Valley Road for area residents.

Bacterial contamination can occur when there’s a water line rupture or when runoff enters a water source during a heavy rainfall.

Coliform bacteria can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea and headaches. It also may pose a health risk for infants, young children and individuals with a low immune system.
