Birth is one of the most raw and beautiful milestones in life to capture. Yukiko Noda, born and raised in Japan but now living in Honolulu, does so through more than 20 photos documenting the birth of babies from three Hawaii families as part of “Welcome to the Earth Side,” at Canon USA gallery through Nov. 29.

The images were taken in August and September at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, the Queen’s Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente’s Moanalua Medical Center. The artist is not revealing the families’ names.
Noda, 43, said she was inspired to turn to photography as a career as an adult after a near-death experience at the age of 15. She and her younger sister, then 8, were in a car wreck with their mother, who was killed. After focusing on weddings for many years, Noda recently turned to birth photography.
“For me there is so much beauty and joy to be a part of welcoming a precious new life to our planet,” she said.
