Elsie Teruya, 97, describes herself as a “happy grandma” and says she has an easy dessert that will make others happy, too.
“Please help me trying my best to show this recipe to the world,” she writes.
It’s made with sweetened condensed milk, but Teruya says it can be varied with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and sweet red bean paste (koshian).
She suggests cutting the dessert into squares and serving it in cupcake liners arranged in a box lined with foil. “Makes nice omiyage for birthdays and parties.”
- 4 envelopes plain gelatin powder
- 1 cup tap water
- 2 (3-ounce) boxes orange gelatin (or any other flavor)
- 4 cups boiling water
- 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
Rinse a 13-by-9-inch glass baking dish (do not wipe; leave it wet). Pour plain gelatin into dish; add tap water and stir.
Add orange gelatin and boiling water. Stir and stir, mix and mix, until nice and smooth.
Add condensed milk. Stir and stir, mix and mix. Let sit, stirring off and on, until completely cool. (Yes, cool, very cool. If you don’t stir and cool, the gelatin and milk will separate.) Refrigerate overnight.
Cut in squares. Makes 48 pieces.
