It’s always summer in Hawaii, or so it seems, and you’re just as likely to see women in swimwear running errands or enjoying lunch with friends as at the beach. For designer Malia Lins Costa of Pikai Swim Hawaii, there are no rules when it comes to ocean fashions.
“I wear suits as bras, under tops with peek-a-boo backs so you can see the detail. Another favorite is a fitted crop-top rash guard with a pair of jean shorts,” said Costa, who enjoys dancing, surfing, sailing and sewing. “I’ve even seen girls wear rash guards with a skirt and heels out at bars.”
With a degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a passion for woodwork, she landed a job as a furniture craftsman on Hawaii island in 2005. “When I became a mother in 2009, I wanted to stay creative but knew that as an artist, woodwork would not be the best medium to work with,” said Costa, who grew up on Oahu. “As a child, I would sew clothes for my dolls, so it wasn’t hard to transition back into sewing.”
The beach-hair look
“The only thing I use for my hair is the salty ocean water and organic coconut oil. Running coconut oil on your locks helps keep the shine, and tousled locks are beautiful.”
Selecting a swimsuit
“My degree in sculpture allowed me to learn a lot about the female form. However, selecting a suit shouldn’t be limiting. A swimsuit is subjective to the person’s needs. As long as you feel comfortable, confident and are able to be active throughout the day with a supportive fit, that’s all that matters.”
Beach bag must-haves
“I’m a mom so it’s a pretty big beach bag, or depending on the situation, it may even be several bags. My main staples are a pareo that can double as a cover-up or even shade, Mason jars with iced green tea, and fresh fruits or nuts. I try to do everything to protect the reef so I’m mindful of my UV protectant selection. I really like Coola sunscreen, which has minimal effect on the environment.”
Everyday fashion
“Of course I love my own designs, but I am also a big fan of American Eagle jean shorts and a loose, comfortable shirt or sweater. Tops with peek-a-boo cutouts offer a little feminine appeal or opportunity to show off your swimwear. A must-have for everything is coconut oil, a handmade lau hala hat, and I’m really into colorful African baskets for carrying all your essentials versus a standard purse.”
When at work
“As a swimwear designer, I have the excuse to always wear swimwear, but I do think there are times for everyone that are appropriate to incorporate swimwear. I have a Michael Kors all-black dress, made from wet-suit material, which I think is timeless. The dress zips up the front, so I can wear a colorful suit underneath for a pop of color.”
When on the road
“I can’t travel without Havaianas slippers and rubber bands that don’t tear your hair.”
