Kamaka Ukulele celebrates centennial
1. Friends and fans of the Kamaka family and their ukulele gathered at Hawaii Theatre to honor the Kamaka Hawaii ukulele company and its 100 years of making fine instruments. Performers including Jake Shimabukuro, Benny Chong, Paula Fuga, Side Order Band, Hookena, Kama Hopkins, Momi Kahawaiolaa, Herb Ohta Sr., Herb Ohta Jr. and Aidan James paid tribute to the family and the musical instrument.
Sky Waikiki anniversary
2. The rooftop nightclub put on a “sky-high” anniversary party Saturday featuring guest DJ A-TRAK, a founder of the Fool’s Gold record label who’s been named “one of the 50 Most Important People in EDM” by Rolling Stone magazine. Signature SKY cocktails were served up by mixologist Jennifer Ackrill.
Pancakes & Booze Art Show
3. The ARTS at Marks Garage featured more than 50 Honolulu artists, live music, body painting and an All-U-Can-Eat Pancake Bar at the Saturday event, part of a nationwide art and music movement.
Homecoming at University of Hawaii
4. UH fans cheered on the school’s athletic teams, band and cheerleaders at “Na ‘ono o Manoa — The Flavors of Manoa,” the homecoming celebration held Oct. 14 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. KC and Tantra from Power 104.3 emceed the show, which included live music from the Vitals 808.
Talk Story Festival
5. Hawaii’s largest storytelling celebration took visitors on a journey Saturday, starting at McCoy Pavilion and traveling into their imaginations. The theme of the event was “Ka Huaka‘i,” or “The Voyage,” and featured storytellers including Hawaiian cultural educators Kahu Kuahiwi Moniz and Puakea Nogelmeier, writer and fight-scene choreographer Kevin Won, Polynesian Voyaging Society member Bruce Black and Latin dancer Adela “The Star Lady” Chu.
Hawaii Zombie Crawl
6. Zombies greeted the Halloween season with the sixth annual Hawaii Zombie Crawl on Oct. 14, which sent the living, lumbering undead through Chinatown venues NextDoor, Downbeat Lounge, Manifest, Bar 35, Proof Public House, The Dragon Upstairs, Hank’s Cafe, O’Toole’s Irish Pub, Scarlet, JJ Dolan’s, Square Barrels, Smith and Kings and Dumb Coq. Bars donated proceeds from the event to Daniel Gray and Christa Wittmier (aka Super CW) to help in their fight against cancer.
