The Honolulu Board of Water Supply says an impersonator called an Oahu resident to schedule a water meter reading to gain access to the home.
The agency says the resident refused access when the man failed to produce any BWS credentials.
According to the BWS, someone contacted the homeowner and asked to schedule a leak check, claiming there was a high meter reading. The homeowner scheduled an appointment for late afternoon; when the individual showed up, he was not wearing BWS attire and was in a van that bore none of the agency’s markings. The man was denied entry after he could not verify that he worked for the BWS.
The Board of Water Supply says that its employees are properly credentialed when they conduct official agency business. They wear attire and drive vehicles with BWS logos clearly visible, and they carry a City and County of Honolulu badge that identifies their agency as the BWS.

The BWS also says it does not schedule customer appointments outside its business hours, 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, nor does it enter a customer’s property to conduct leak detection.
People who note suspicious activity or want to confirm whether an individual is a BWS worker can call the agency at 748-5000 or 748-5041, and are also encouraged to call the Honolulu Police Department.
